Knoxville pest control

We are Tennessee's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Knoxville raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. Unlike most Knoxville pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Knoxville Raccoon Control Tip: Do Female Raccoons Make Good Mothers?
Humans give birth to their young helpless into the world. For several years thereafter, parents take on the difficult task of caring for their babies until they grow to be adults, ready to take on the world. However, in this regard, humans are not special.

There is maternal care in all species of mammals, of which 95% exhibit female-only care. A great example is a raccoon. While you might already know that raccoons take care of their young, you might be clueless about how good of a mother they are. In this article, we explore why female raccoons are great mothers.

No Fathers Present
Raccoons live a pretty solitary life. But during January and June, both males and females come together to perform the mating ritual. After the deed is done, the male goes back to his solitary life, and the female is left alone to carry the pregnancy and take care of her babies once she delivers.

Looking for A Cozy Shelter
The gestation period for a female raccoon lasts 65 days. And in that period, she must find a place where she can birth and raise her babies for the next few months. This act is referred to as ‘nesting'.

In the wild, mother raccoons prepare their future nursery in hollowed trees or abandoned burrows. However, raccoons have learned to take advantage of human structures like the attic, chimney, and crawlspaces as they provide the necessary warmth and safety against predators.

Babies Born Helpless into the World
After the 65-day gestation period, the mother will usually give birth to two to five babies, commonly referred to as kits. These kits are born blind, with their eyes closed. For the next few days, all they do is eat, sleep and react to any sense of touch - otherwise, they remain still. This makes them dependent on their mother. They will become functional only when they're about six to eight weeks of age.

The Struggles of Breastfeeding
For the next two to four months, the mother raccoon will feed her kits exclusively on milk. What this means is that she has to be well-fed so she can provide her pups with the necessary nutrients they need to survive. At dusk, she has to leave her kits in the nest in search of food. As omnivores, raccoons will pretty much eat anything, including nuts, frogs, berries, mice, and even a slice of pizza.

Lookout for Predators
Once she's done eating, she scouts the entire vicinity of her nest to ensure no predators are lurking behind. Common raccoon predators include bobcats, owls, and coyotes. Once she's sure that the coast is clear, she returns to the nest to breastfeed her babies.

The Training Period
After about three or four months, her kits will have developed adequate strength and agility. They are now ready to leave their nest and explore the world with their mother. The mother takes them out at nighttime to show them all the common food sources in the territory. She also shows them how to effectively navigate the territory. During this period, the kits learn all sorts of acrobatic and survival skills from their mother. As the kits explore the terrain, it is not uncommon for them to get stuck or hindered by an obstacle. Their mother will pick them up in her mouth and drag them through the difficult nooks and crannies. Raising baby raccoons require lots of patience, and mother raccoons are up to the task.

Ferocious Defenders
During their outings, the mother will ferociously guard her young against predators. Mother raccoons are usually meek, but they turn belligerent when their babies are threatened.

Send-Off
A female raccoon will continue to care for her babies for about a year. At about 11 months of age, the females in the litter will have reached sexual maturity. The males often reach sexual maturity when they're about two years of age, so they'll have to wait till the next mating season to pass on their genes.

When they leave, females usually take up residence close to where they were born. Males, on the other hand, move far away to form their own territory.

Wrap Up
Raccoon mothers are awesome mothers. They not only take care of their kits, but they provide them with the necessary survival skills they need to thrive once they become independent.
